About This Blog
SputnikTravels is our shared logbook for the people we love. We’re using this space to keep friends and family up to date on where we’re sailing, what we’re learning, and how life aboard Sputnik really feels—salty bits, quiet anchorages, small disasters and all. Think of it as a postcard from the boat, whenever we can find enough signal to send one.
Latest adventures from the logbook
Catch up on our most recent passages, and life aboard Sputnik. New stories are added when we have reached a milestone or when we make it off the dock and out to sea.
Sputnik: Our Home on the Sea
A 1980 steel-hulled custom designed cutter, Sputnik was built for the long haul. She’s 10 meters long, 10 tons of steady confidence, offering a safe harbor in the open sea and a cozy sanctuary wherever we drop the hook.
Meet the crew
The small team keeping Sputnik pointed (mostly) in the right direction.
Jud
Captain & Head Worrier
Charts the course, watches the weather, and checks the anchor three times every night.
Leah
Navigator & Snack Officer
Keeps us sailing, brews the coffee, and ensures every single mile gets into the logbook.
part time navigator & sail trim officer
Every crew needs someone on board to keep everyone honest. "What kind of trim is that?! Look at the telltales!"
Other trusty crew piloting our ship are the windvane and the autopilot, quietly keeping us on course when our hands (and eyes) need a break.
Sputnik's planned route
The ideal scenario, weather, preparation and time permitting: we’ll wander around Bowen Island and the local Gulf Islands, then head north up the inside of Vancouver Island. From there, we’ll work our way along the northern coast toward Prince Rupert and over to Haida Gwaii before looping back, maybe down the outside of the island. In the fall, the plan is to slip south from the Victoria area toward California, the Baja, and whatever lies beyond.
